Yesterday I got a notice from one of my friends on Facebook that the whales were jumping out of the water in Rockaway Beach. Of course I had to go and see if I can take some photos of this since it has been happening a lot lately. Something about the storm washing away the beach has brought the whales in closer is what the locals are saying. I don't know about that but I did see quite a few of them. There were surfers and paddlers out in the water trying to get closer and I could see them all very clear in my viewfinder. In the first picture I was watching these guys when I saw him start to paddle towards the shore with all his energy. It was obvious to me he had seen the whale on its way up to shore. I didn't even see the surfers up close as I was watching the guy paddling like crazy. If you look close you can see the ripple behind him.
And within a few seconds the whale jumped out of the water. Not as clear as I would like to be it but it shows what was going on and was good enough to share.
It was very hard to time when they would jump out of the water and you are forced to use auto focus which doesn't help things. It really is a must see in person type of thing.
If you want to see more head over to the Camerawe Facebook page and give us a “Like” while you are there.
